About Kipuka Olowalu: Kipuka Olowalu is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Our mission is to perpetuate the traditional and customary practices of kanaka maoli, the native people of the Hawaiian Islands, and promote opportunities to regain the spiritual connection with our ancestors through the practice of hanai ʻāina to ensure these beliefs and customs are passed down to future generations.
ʻĀina Technician
General Description:
The role of the ʻĀina Technician is to assist in the technical activities and maintenance required which may include invasive species removal, plantings, plant propagation, removal of debris, and other physically demanding labor. The applicant must maintain a general respect for the natural environments as the primary role is to preserve cultural resources and native species of flora. Previous knowledge of native plant species is not required, however it is expected that the applicant must learn and be able to identify the native plantings on site over time. The ʻĀina Tech is expected to work collaboratively with coworkers, communicate effectively about necessary work, and assist in providing solutions to maintenance issues. Following direct instructions from supervisors is essential for this position but incorporating a sense of ownership and initiative over projects is appreciated. The ʻĀina Tech will also assist the Coordinator with volunteer management and education, and will be expected to co-lead groups as needed. The ideal candidate will have a passion for ‘āina stewardship, serving the community, and perpetuating Hawaiian practices and values.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Interest and willingness to learn about cultural and natural aspects of Hawaii,
Passion for Hawaii’s people, culture, communities, and environment
Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends
Ability to work under stress during peak workload periods
Physically capable of manual outdoor labor (lifting heavy objects, constant bending, walking long distances, etc.) in harsh outdoor conditions (heat and sun exposure)
Problem-solving skills and ability to work well with others or autonomously by identifying needs and completing tasks diligently
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in physically demanding conditions.
Experience with natural resource management and outdoor education
Experience using power tools and equipment such as chainsaws, weed eaters etc.
Experience installing and maintaining irrigation systems
Background knowledge in native Hawaiian flora
Familiarity with conservation practices in Hawaii
Compensation & Benefits: This is a full-time hourly position with medical benefits, 401k, and pain time off. Starting pay for this position is $25/hour. This is a grant-funded position, and employment is contingent upon the continued availability of grant funds.
